Social networking is essentially a combined term for apps and websites that focuses on community-based feedback, communication, engagement, collaboration, and sharing of content. Different media platforms are devoted to various sites, including micro-blogging, online gaming, bookmarking, wikis, etc.

Different people use social media according to their own requirements; some of them use just to stay in touch with their loved ones, some use them to communicate with different communities, and some use mainly for their business’s needs, for example, we see (B2C) business to consumer websites where consumers are being sold products directly by the companies. Multiple techniques have been created to count the number of references and brand recognition.

Social media is now easily accessible to almost everyone with the mighty help of mobile applications, some of which are:

  • Facebook:

Fb is a platform for social interaction that enables registered people to make a profile, post their images, clips make calls to family, friends, and colleagues.

  • Twitter:

Twitter is a website where users tweet. A tweet is basically a short post which they broadcast, and they follow many Tweets from other users on various sites and computers.

  • Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is an open-content encyclopedia created by a community known as Wikipedians. Here you can publish an article without being registered for it. It was formed in January 2001.

  • LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a website that was basically made for the business community. The goal of this website is to create profiles that highlight your current and prior job experiences. You can share your resume, link, and build a network of colleagues and teammates that can help you move forward in your career.

  • Reddit:

Reddit is a website where different stories of different topics such as technology, politics, sports, or music are being promoted by different sub-communities known as “subreddits”. The Reddit members, also known as “redittors” vote for these tales and submit them to the top of the main forum page of the web.

  • Pinterest:

Pinterest is a website where different online images are being categorized and shared. Its main focus is on visual. If you click on one of its images, you will be taken to its original source. For example, clicking on a picture of a house will redirect you to that house’s purchasing site. Similarly, clicking on a picture of a car will redirect you to that car’s purchasing website, etc.

Communication skills:

The term “communication” basically means “common” according to the Latin word “communis”. It is the normal activity of all human beings, by words (written or spoken), body language, or signals, to communicate thoughts, emotions, knowledge, and ideas to others. It is simply a purposeful communication, leading to a viable understanding and agreement between the sender and the recipient of a message.

Robert Anderson, in his concept, observes, “Communication is an exchange of ideas, beliefs, or knowledge through speech, writing, or signs”.  And according to Louis A Allen, “Communication is the sum of all the things one person does in the mind of another when he tries to establish understanding. It’s a bridge of importance. A structured and continuous process of telling, listening, and learning is involved.

Keith Davis describes communication in human activity at work as, “Communication is characterized as the process of transmitting information and knowledge from one individual to another. It is a way, with facts, suggestions, thoughts, and values, to meet others. It is a bridge of meanings between individuals in order to express what they feel and know. By using this bridge, a person can safely cross the river of confusion that divides individuals often”. Social media and communication skills improve and expose man to effectively develop mass influence.

Does social media affect communication skills?

Almost 3.6 billion people use social media at the moment, which is basically 47% of the entire planet. Thus, the impact of social media on communication skills isn’t a shock. Not only did social media discover new ways of communicating, but the existing ones have also been reshaped. The world’s perspective on communication has changed because of the rise of social media. The modern one has changed our old way of communication, and this modern communication way has both its ups and downs, i.e. its optimistic side and its pessimistic one, all of this because of social media.

While studying social media and communication skills, you’ll get to know that the damaging influence of social media on teenagers and adolescents could be evident to parents and educators, but the good impact of social media is largely neglected. Sometimes social media improves communication skills. The advantages of social media when educating students on how to build healthier screen time habits may also be crucial to understand.

The number of platforms:

Social networking is not only confined to FB and Twitter. More and more social media platforms are being introduced to us as time progresses. Instagram has been the most widely used website for the last couple of years, even more than WhatsApp and Facebook. These ever-increasing websites/apps/platforms are giving opportunities to people to showcase their talent. Now people belonging from rural and remote areas whom nobody knows about and whom nobody noticed come forward and seeks people’s attention via these social media platforms.

Connected to each other more than ever:

Another one of the most important lessons that you’ll know while doing your research on social media and communication skills is that we are connected to each other now more than ever is because of social media. People with the same interests are coming together to form groups for a purpose. According to an international survey, 40% of social media users felt closer to their friends, and 27% felt they had more friends because of social media. Without any limitations or restrictions, members of different cultures often come together. By starting a discussion, social media allows unknown individuals to meet each other.

Young People Read News:

Reading news has never been this much cooler and interesting as it is now. Nearly 24 percent of young people on social media receive information through social media. According to Wibbitz and a staggering 62 percent receive political coverage from Facebook. People post exciting articles that they find and can visit the pages of different news outlets on social media.

An increase in the speed of communication:

The first and foremost important advantage that comes to our minds is the improvement in the speed of communication while seeing the benefits of social media and communication skills. The old way of communication was a very steady and slow way of communication, but now because of technology and social media we see that messages are being delivered within a split second. Important instructions and notifications are being conveyed to thousands of people within a blink of an eye.

Inside the Afar Perspective:

Another positive impact is that we can now get a close glimpse of other cultures and locations. Now we are able to see what others are doing around the world because of social media, particularly websites like Instagram.

Summarized Writing:

Messages have become shorter and shorter and more succinct, beginning with the 2000’s limited character text messaging and now with the 140-character tweet. For summarized writing, other communication fields have also adapted, such as condensed job’s memos, short educational dialogues between teachers and the students, and simplified promotional messages.

Going viral:

The fast and simple “share” on so many social site buttons have contributed to the “going viral” phenomenon. Tweets, videos, and other content can be easily shared with millions of people between platforms in a matter of days.

2) How social media and communication skills negatively affect each other?

As we know that social media helps communication skills, we should, at the same time, also know that currently, social media is ruining communication skills.  Some of its negative effects are:

The impoverishment of language:

Excessive use of social media causes the impoverishment of language. In order to reply quickly to someone, people use shortened versions of words to deliver their messages. These words may be “k”, “tc”, “gr8” , “der”, “ur”, “ttyl”, and so on that destroys the grammar and the syntax entirely. Social media has also made people use slang terms more than ever, not knowing how much they forgot the real beauty of a language.

Boredom in conversation:

Another one of its negative impacts is that now when we have an actual face-to-face in-person conversation, we become bored. Face-to-face communication, which is the most important aspect of general conversation, has lost its importance because of social media, resulting in the ruin of society’s moral values. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter may have given us some online friends, but it also did take from us our real friends.

Using Emojis and GIFs:

Our way of writing a message has also been affected by the use of Emojis and GIFs. It does look funny and innocent, but what it is actually doing is that it is basically interfering with our ability to compose an answer properly. People now use these moving pictures and smiley faces that have absolutely no level of creativity in them instead of using their minds in order to construct an answer with words from scratch.

Lack of Confidence:

As we know that in social media, absolutely no face-to-face conversation is involved; therefore, social application users, as compared to those who actually do face-to-face conversation a lot in their lives, lack a huge amount of confidence. They feel hesitation while doing face-to-face communication with others; thus they try to avoid gatherings where they feel that they may be asked a question or two. They feel powerless when you make them sit among people. Communicating only via electronic devices reduces their ability to face others person-to-person.

Decreases the ability of Thinking:

Thinking and exploring increases mental capability. Your mind gets trapped if you’re not using your mental skills and doesn’t encourage you to get off your normal routine and therefore reduces the spam of your thoughts.

When you’re sitting alone and you are on Facebook, Instagram, or any other social media platform communicating with your friends, what you are actually doing is preventing yourself from exploring different new thoughts and ideas that you could do with trained colleagues that can help and also guide you.

3) Conclusion:

No doubt that in the future social media platforms may alter, but their concept will surely stay the same. We can’t resist or avoid engaging with social media, so we have to become digitally literate as time progresses. We can still see a large number of grey areas in society’s social media, but it will indeed be dealt with as time will progress. In the future, those who’ll have the knowledge and the confidence to use social media and communication skills effectively will find themselves way above those who are ignorant towards it.
